Ava Hawthorne Verbally Commits to Drake
Ava Hawthorne will be taking her talents to Des Moines.
The point guard from Gilbert, Iowa recently announced her verbal commitment to Drake and is set to join the Bulldogs in 2022. Hawthorne is fresh off an impressive sophomore campaign, helping guide Gilbert to their first State Tournament appearance since 1997.
Hawthorne led the Tigers in scoring (16.7 PPG), three-pointers made (32 3FGM), free throws made (74 FTM), assists (4.1 APG) and steals (2.5 SPG).
To get a glimpse of Hawthorne's versatility on both ends of the floor, check out these highlights from a recent tournament with the All-Iowa Attack (via Courtside Films).
Hawthorne thrives in transition as both a facilitator and a scorer. She can also stretch the floor with her ability to knock down shots from long range. In addition, the 5'10" guard is very instinctual on the defensive end, showing active hands along the perimeter and persistently contesting shots from all areas of the court. That combination of skills will be a perfect match in Drake's system.
Did I forget to mention that Ava Hawthorne is also an actress?
Hawthorne played the lead role in the independent film, New Providence, which documented the final season of six-on-six basketball in Iowa. It was a fitting role for Hawthorne, as her mother, grandmother and great grandmother all played six-on-six basketball. Another future Bulldog, Ashley Iiams, appeared in the film as well.
Hawthorne will join a Drake program that will already feature a talented crop of guards from Iowa. Ashley Iiams (Ames), Katie Dinnebier (Waukee) and Maggie Phipps (Ankeny Centennial) are all set to arrive in Des Moines in 2021. The future is looking awfully bright for the Bulldogs.
